Hale-Bopp Images and Movies

Hale-Bopp Colour Movie (0.5Mb gif)

Click here or on the image to see a colour movie of Hale-Bopp. The images were taken by Michael Brown (University of Melbourne) on the evening of 2 March 98 with the Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories 40 inch Telescope. The 6 images were taken between 9:57 UT and 11:02 UT and clearly show the motion of the comet. The tail of the comet can be seen stretching towards a small group of galaxies near the top right of the image. Each colour image is a composite of 60 second R band, 90 second V band and 120 second B band images. The size of the image is 7 arcminutes by 10 arcminutes. The "donut" towards the top of the image is an artifact of the telescope. The bright coloured dots are cosmic rays detected by the CCD. Dust in the orbital plane of the comet is seen in the raw images but not in this animation.

Hale-Bopp at the end of September 97

Images of Hale-Bopp by Michael Brown (University of Melbourne). The original image (left) was a 20 second R band integration obtained at 19:03 UT on 30 September 1997 with the 1m telescope at Siding Spring Observatory, Australia. The second image (right) has had a median fit subtracted to show the jets surrounding the nucleus.

Hale-Bopp in June 97

A Photo of Hale-Bopp taken by Michael Brown at 6pm on Wednesday 4 June 1997 near Woodend, Victoria, Australia. The camera was a tripod mounted Ricoh KR-5 Super 35mm SLR camera with a 50mm lens. The exposure was approximately 40 seconds at F stop 1.7 with Fuji 400 film. Orion can be seen to the left of the photo.

Colour Photo of Hale-Bopp taken near Kilmore

A Photo of Hale-Bopp taken by Michael Brown at 6:25pm on Sunday 11 May 1997 about 15km north west of Kilmore, Victoria, Australia. The camera was a tripod mounted Ricoh KR-5 Super 35mm SLR camera with a 50mm lens. The exposure was 30 seconds at F stop 1.7 with Kodak Flexi 400 film. The light at the top right of the photograph is from the Moon. The photo was scanned by David Jamieson.

V band image of C/1995 01 (Hale-Bopp)

Image of Hale-Bopp by Paul Francis (University of Melbourne)

A median combined image of 21 images obtained at 9pm (AEST, 11:00 UT) on 18th August 1995 using the 1m telescope at Siding Spring. The original images were three minute integrations in the V-band. The pixel size is 0.61".

R band image of Comet Hale-Bopp

An image of Hale-Bopp taken by Michael Brown and Michael Hicks using the 40 inch telescope at Siding Spring Observatory. The image is a 40 second CCD integration in the R band taken at 16:21 UT on July 9 1996. Comet Hale-Bopp could become one of the brightest comets this century early next year.
