There is a wide range of possible topics (see our research page), so please indicate if you are interested in a particular topic or have any preference for theoretical or observational work.
  • The dates of the scholarships are flexible, but normally run for up to ten weeks during the 2003/2004 vacation (2003 Dec 1 to 2004 March 1).
  • They are aimed at undergraduates finishing their third year but 2nd and 4th year undergraduates are also encouraged to apply. International students are very welcome to apply, but please note we are not able to fund travel to Melbourne.
  • Please send a covering letter, CV including an academic record and the names of two academic referees (e.g. lecturers or tutors) by post to:

Undergraduate courses

  • We offer astrophysics courses at all levels of an undergraduate physics degree as follows.
  • For technical information please consult the Undergraduate Handbook
  1. 100-level
    • 640-176 The Solar System and the Cosmos
    • 640-177 Stars and Galaxies
  2. 200-level
    • 640-237 Astrophysics and Optics II
  3. 300-level
    • 640-351 Astrophysics and Optics III
  4. Honours Year
    • As part of the Physics honours year, the astrophysics group offers a range of projects in astronomy and astrophysics. This project counts for 50% of the Honours year grade. In addition, at least 2 of 6 lecture courses, which comprise the remaining 50% of the Honours grade, can be astrophysics courses. Refer to honours studies for further information.

International students

International students submit a single application for a place in the relevant department at the University of Melbourne ( Application form ). Once an offer of a place is made, the applicant is automatically considered for one of the international scholarships available. These scholarships provide money for both international student fees and a living allowance. Although advertised deadlines are mid-September each year, applications can be made at any time. Many scholarships are awarded in the first round however offers are made during most of the academic year. In order to be competitive for a scholarship, applicants require a first class honours degree of a high standard in either physics or engineering.

Travel scholarships

The School of Graduate Studies at the University of Melbourne offers:

  • short travel grants: $1k once (plus matching money from dept.)
  • long travel grants: $5k (plus matching money from dept.)
  • Extra Travel funds for PhD students.

Astrophysics group

  • at least one extended overseas study trip will be funded by the group.
  • the group has good access to Australian and international observing facilities.
  • subject areas for research degrees are listed under research interests for the astrophysics group

For more information about any of the above programs please contact A/Prof. Rachel Webster, email: rwebster@physics.unimelb.edu.au.

Career Paths

You might well be wondering what happens to people after they study astronomy. After doing an undergraduate degree containing astronomy subjects, the possibilities are endless. However there do tend to be fewer destinations for people who have obtained research degrees (Masters or PhDs). It is also clear that the longer one has studied astronomy, the more likely one is to stay there. This is a list of where the students who have passed through the group have ended up, and what they are doing.
