Overview
A group of Australian institutions (Universities of Melbourne
and Sydney, Australia Telescope National Facility and Anglo-Australian Observatory) have applied for seed funding to develop an Australian
capability in the international Virtual Observatory projects.
The initial application through the ARC LIEF program has been funded for 2003.
It is anticipated that further funding will be requested in 2003
for the years 2004-2006.
This workshop is planned to bring together all interested parties to
discuss possible future directions for Australian involvement in
the Virtual Observatory projects.
Goals

To update the Australian community on the development of
the Virtual Observatory internationally.

To discuss current involvement of the Australian community in
virtual observatory projects.

To develop future plans for Australian involvement in the
international Virtual Observatory.

The workshop will begin Wednesday morning around 10 a.m. (for
those flying into Melbourne) and conclude on Thursday afternoon.
Included in the A$50 registration fee (payable in cash at the meeting)
will be lunch and refreshments both days. There will also be a
workshop dinner Wednesday night at the Stokehouse in St Kilda, which
participants will pay for on the night.
If you register by Nov. 2, you will only pay A$40 for registration.
The fee will be waived for students, but only if registered
by Nov. 2.
The present exchange rate is about 50 US cents per AU dollar.

The workshop will take place in the Laby Theatre in the Physics Buildings
on the main campus of the
University of Melbourne,
within walking distance of the Melbourne CBD.

Accommodation can be booked at

(just across the campus from Physics at U. Melb).
The rate (single occupancy only) is $55 for bed + cooked breakfast;
bathroom facilities are shared.
Payment by cash or cheque only.
For those wishing to stay at a hotel, an inexpensive (and convenient)
choice is Hotel Ibis, about 5 minutes' walk from campus and about $118
per night.
